Thanos’ Snap Has an Official Name and It’s Brutal

Spoilers ahead for Avengers: Infinity War and potentially Avengers 4.

Thanos’ infamous snap at the end of Avengers: Infinity War has officially been given a name, thanks to an official Marvel tie-in book.

As reported by Screenrant, Thanos’ snap is known around the MCU world as “The Decimation.”

This revelation arrives thanks to Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War: The Cosmic Quest Volume Two: Aftermath by Brandon T. Snider.

According to this new story, the Avengers have kept the truth from the world, as it would “hardly help the world to heal.”

The general populace knows nothing of the Mad Titan Thanos, they just know that there was some event that caused their loved ones to disappear before their eyes.

Interestingly enough, The Decimation moniker was previously used in the comics during the aftermath of events that took place in the House of M with the Avengers and the X-Men.

In that story, Scarlet Witch removed the powers of 90% of the world’s mutant population and many of these “depowered mutants” died in the aftermath due to reasons associated with their lack of powers.

As Screenrant puts it, “The similarities between these two Decimations are striking – both were initiated by a single being, transformed the world in one tragic instant, led to widespread suffering and grief, and were kept secret by the heroes.”

In addition to revealing “The Decimation” as the name of Thanos’ snap, this story follows Dr. Erik Selvig and his team as they try to figure out what happened following the events of Infinity War.

While we wait for the title and first trailer of Avengers 4, be sure to check out our previous coverage on Thanos’ snap, including how the snap affected him, why the Russo brothers filmed the Thanos snap victim’s scene the way they did, and where all the major players are after Infinity War.
