LazyTown favourite Stefan Karl Stefansson’s tragic death aged 43 was confirmed last night, and comes more than year after he last updated his 212,000 Instagram followers.
The actor told fans that they gave him “hope” during his health woes, which saw him diagnosed with aggressive bile duct cancer.
The father-of-four shared a picture of the sky, complete with a rainbow, in his final post, which has been liked over 170,000 times.
The small screen regular, who rose to fame as Robbie Rotten in the children’s television series, was inundated with replies to his message.
Stefan wrote: “From the bottom of my heart I thank you for the support you provide me. You give me hope and you all move me.”
Alongside his heartfelt words was a quote, which read: “At the end of every storm, there is a rainbow of hope.”
Many have since paid tribute in reply to the upload, with one user writing: “Rest in peace you. Will always be number one.”
Two others continued: “RIP, you where my legend,” and: “The best villain in the world has left us but with good memories. RIP Karl.”
“Lazytown won’t be the same without you,” a third stated.
It comes after his wife of 16 years, Steinunn Olina, confirmed he had died in a statement released to Express.co.uk.
“Stefan Karl Stefansson, 43, has passed away after battling aggressive bile duct cancer for two years.
“Per Stefan’s wishes, there will be no funeral. His earthly remains will be scattered in secrecy in a distant ocean,” it stated.
The release went on: “Stefan’s family wants to express their gratitude for the support and warmth received in recent years, and to express their deepest sympathy to the many friends and fans of Stefan Karl.”
Meanwhile, friend and manager Cheryl Edison said he had contributed “humour and joy” to the world.
“The Stefan Karl Academy & Center for the Performing Arts will launch in 2019 in Switzerland, hosted by HIAG Immobilien,” she said.
The centre will be dedicated to “training young people in the history and skills of expression across all genres”.
Cheryl added: “The Theater will offer audiences an opportunity to become part of Stefan’s legacy through enjoyment.”
Stefan first revealed he had cancer in October 2016, and revealed it was inoperable five months ago.
LazyTown ran between 2004 and 2007 before being revived between 2013 and 2014.
It followed Stephanie (played by Julianna Rose Mauriello) and her superhero pal Sportacus (Magnús Scheving), as they attempted to get their town to be active.
